MAT: How MaineHealth is Treating Opioid Use Disorder

If you have been reading about the opioid epidemic in Maine, you likely have heard about Medication Assisted Therapy (MAT). MAT combines behavioral treatments with medication to help control opioid cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Dr. Kristen Silvia, a family physician who provides MAT in our community, will discuss the evidence behind it and how it can help people struggling with opioid use disorder. People who are struggling with opioid use disorder, loved ones who know someone struggling, or any interested community members are welcome to come learn about this treatment.
Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Morning Session

The 9-week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Program is designed to help you cope more effectively with both long and short term stressors. Developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn from the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, MBSR has been scientifically proven to enhance pain management and reduce pain levels, improve focus, resilience and the capacity to recover more quickly from challenging life events. Taught by an approved teacher of MBSR, instruction involves mindful meditation practices, discussion, gentle stretching and yoga (appropriate for all fitness levels.)

Are you looking for new and different ways to approach your chronic pain? Led by MaineHealth’s physician experts in integrative medicine, this class will provide an overview of a variety of alternative and complementary therapies which may supplement a more conventional approach to the treatment of pain. Examples of the therapies reviewed will include mindfulness for pain relief, acupuncture, osteopathic manipulation, and nutritional counseling.
